Augmentation
This occurs when a group of notes is heard in a particular rhythm, following which the same notes are heard again with the note values doubled. For example, a tune made up of minims (2 beat notes) could then be heard moving in semibreves (4 beat notes). Augmentation can sound like the music has slowed down, but the basic beat remains constant - it is the length of the notes which has changed.
In this example, the original melody moves in half beat notes (quavers). When we see it in augmentation, the same notes now appear as one beat notes (crotchets).
