Nat 5 March Revision 23: GROUND BASS

Ground bass 

A bass line which repeats over a number of bars (not an ostinato or riff, which is much shorter) while the music above it develops. In the example below, follow the score and notice how the bass line (the lowest line of music on the score) repeats over and over while the voice develops the piece above.





Below is another great example of a ground bass. Look at what the left hand is playing in the keyboard part (bass clef) - it's playing the same 2 bar figure over and over for ages while the voices develop the melodies above. This is a ground bass.
