This is the first part of a 2 part posting on the layout of the Nat 5 paper.
The National 5 Understanding Music paper has these types of questions -
1 A multiple choice type question, also requiring some single answers, like this -
2 A map type question. You will hear the music for this question 3 times, with a voice leading you through on the first 2 playings only. It will look like this -
3 A music literacy question. You will listen to - and follow a score of - part of a piece of music.
- You may be asked to write in the time signature - this goes at the start, after the treble clef and on the 1st line only.
- You may be asked the key of the music - one sharp is G, one flat is F, no sharps or flats is C or A minor.
- They like to ask about tempo in this question.
- You could be asked to insert the correct rest into a bar or to insert missing notes.
- You may be asked about dynamics.
- Or to write 'tr' above a note where a trill is played.
- You may be asked about intervals.
- You may be asked to complete a bar which is missing some melody or rhythm.
It will look something like this -
4 Another group of multiple choice questions. One question will ask about chords. This part will look like this -
