The time signature is the 2 numbers at the start of a piece of music, like this -

The time signature appears one the first line only, NOT ON EVERY LINE!!!


The top number in the time signature tells us how many beats are in a bar.

Here, the time signature tells us that there are 4 beats in a bar. 

Here, there are 3 beats in a bar.
